Susan Wells walked briskly across the lobby of the Four Seasons Hotel and asked the clerk for Grant’s room number. She knew the clerk wasn’t supposed to give out that information. She was surprised at how easily she was able to turn on the charm and convince the clerk that Grant was waiting for her. She said thank you, turned quickly to hide her satisfied smile, and walked toward the elevators.

Her intent was to apologize in person for her strange behavior earlier in the evening. Although Susan had initially suspected that Grant was something of a cowboy, a political ultraconservative, she remained very curious about him. She’d thought he might be the embodiment of the arrogant, ignorant, right-wing conservative she detested. But she’d seen something deeper – maybe a little mysterious and more insightful – in him during their earlier meetings, and she found him intriguing. She was drawn to him because she enjoyed his wit, and she felt he exuded a confident strength that she found attractive. And she thought he was handsome; when he smiled at her she felt like she had in junior high when the older boys smiled at her. Not many men made her feel like that anymore.

When she reached Grant’s room, she was just about to knock when she thought better of it. “A personal apology is in order here … but he might think I came to his room for the wrong reason,” she mumbled to herself just as she was about to knock on the door.

She reached into her purse, found her cell phone, and called Grant’s room while she stood outside his door. When she heard his room phone ring, she moved away from his door slightly so that he wouldn’t hear her voice in the hall if he answered the phone.

Grant had changed his clothes and was brushing his teeth when the phone rang. It was 11:30 p.m. now, twenty minutes after he’d spoken with the President, and he assumed the call would be from Jessica Wickham. Perhaps Thom had forgotten something. When he answered, the voice on the other end was clear and friendly.

“Hello, Grant, this is Susan Wells. I’d like to talk to you.”

“Do you have a toothache, Susan?” He was pleased with himself that he’d thought quickly enough to come up with something better than “OK,” and he was glad she couldn’t see him smile.

“No,” she replied.

“Perhaps you’d like to talk to my receptionist and schedule your next appointment? Have you been flossing?” He sounded very serious. He wouldn’t let go of her false claim to be his patient, and he made sure the sarcasm in his questioning was obvious.

“Look, I came all the way over here to explain myself. Don’t make it any more difficult for me.”

“You’re in the hotel?” She could hear the surprise in his voice.

“I’m in the lobby,” she lied.

“Well, that’s great! I’ll be right down.” He’d wanted to see her all day, but after the incident at Georgetown he’d resigned himself to the fact that he wouldn’t see Susan during this trip to D.
